Leo Zogmayer – WHY CHINA? (II) Saalfelden, Nexus Kunsthalle 13 02 2009 – 04 04 2009 www.kunsthausnexus.com
Why China? Until today we have been unable to find suitable methods for the long-overdue dialogue between Europe and China. The West continues to see in Asia only an exotic variant of its own interpretation of the world. Imprisoned in linear model-thinking, slaves to time, disposed towards theoretical abstraction, causality-thoughts etc., to the westerner it is incomprehensible, how a culture of "action without action" is able to display such effectiveness. Spellbound, he looks at the rapidly growing economy of the asian competition - and ceases to understand the world... Our greek idea-world is about to run aground on clearer-sighted asian thinking. Until today, this epochal process has hardly been perceived, and certainly not adequately reflected upon. There are now good reasons to assume that the more open mode of movement of art is more likely to set communication in motion, rather than political, economic or scientific advances. Art since the time of european modernity suggests a number of affinities to chinese thought, that are alien to our linearly-causal academic language. L.Z.
